The role of human resource departments is to ‘plan picnics, put out the company newsletter (complete with time-in-service anniversaries duly noted), and generally drive everyone crazy by enforcing rules and regulations that appear to have no purpose other than to bolster the bureaucracy. They derive the little power they have by being cloyingly benevolent on one hand and company scolds on the other.’
I enjoy following Jack Welch. He can afford to say what he thinks. He draws on his successful career as CEO at General Electric, at a time when the company revenue and profits soared. It’s no coincidence that Ned Herrmann, who developed the HBDI profiles and whole brain thinking model (which we use at BDC), worked at General Electric and actually designed and implemented the model during his time there.
The Role of HR
So what does Jack Welch really think the role of the HR team is? Actually, he thinks that every company’s HR team should be the ‘killer app’; helping to to appoint the best people and then getting them to play together. It’s that simple.
